Let's share your thoughts on the challenges and opportunities of Sustainable Waste Management.
Solid waste management is a major environmental problem in India. The poor waste infrastructure and population growth makes it more challenging. There is an urgent need for sustainable waste management as majority of the residual waste is not landfilled properly which can impact both public and environmental health. It is important to manage the waste at the source. Waste segregation at the source is an important factor for sustainable and economically viable waste management. Informal sectors should be integrated in the waste material reuse and recycle. Furthermore, waste- to -energy technologies should be increased and integrated with maximum recycling which can reduce the dumping of the waste in India.

Increasing urbanization has waste management as one of the key components of infrastructure development to improve living standards. Especially in developing countries, where due to land's availability, waste is open dumped or burned. These landfills are the third largest contributor to anthropogenic methane emission, additionally, it also leads to soil contamination, and groundwater contamination. The paper talks about pathways to develop sustainable solid waste management systems for smart and sustainable cities in Indian context (1).
