Communications and Healthcare

Effective communication plays an important role in healthcare. Patients and healthcare workers should be able to convey the information efficiently and health worker  should be able to interpret the information properly. effective communication is bidirectional. Components such as, healthcare literacy, cultural competency and language barriers should be addressed properly for effective delivery care.

Effective communication in healthcare is a two-dimensional and two-way street. Communication between healthcare professionals and communication between the healthcare provider and patient/client. The various modes are face-to-face, written communication, and e-communications. Evidence suggests written communication to be more efficient than other forms of communication among health professionals. When it comes to e-communication/digital communication, it has proved to be a boon in the era of the pandemic. However, access to e-communication remains a challenge in resource-poor settings, especially in LMICs.

The use of information and communication technology to support health care is consequently growing in popularity. Communication helps in designing personalized care to provide palliative care instead of curative care which can further reduce unwanted invasive treatments. Effective communication can result in a reduction of depression and anxiety among patients and fear to visit healthcare professionals. Palliative care reduce emergency admissions reduces expenditure on secondary and tertiary, and lower patient mortality rates. In addition, end-of-life discussions have been associated with reduced invasive medical care near death, such as ventilation and resuscitation.
