Adolescent obesity has emerged as one of the major public health issues in recent times. Shift in eating patterns, excessive intake of processed foods, and lack of physical activity have led to the development of obesity in many adolescents today (1). Apart from the negative health consequences associated with adolescent obesity, there is also evidence that obesity in adolescence may affect mental well-being, self-confidence, and academic performance (2).
It is very important for teenagers to learn the concept of preventing obesity. Since some habits learned during childhood and adolescence are likely to remain unchanged throughout adulthood, adolescents need to be taught about the importance of having a proper diet consisting of more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins rather than junk foods containing a lot of sugars, salts, and fats (3). In addition to the proper diet, regular physical exercise such as participation in various sports activities and games is highly beneficial (4).
Thus, through collaboration between schools, families, and communities, efforts can be made to develop an environment that facilitates the adoption of healthy lifestyles by adolescents. The issue of raising adolescent awareness regarding obesity prevention must be considered seriously (1,4).
