Precision nutrition (PN) was introduced as one of these approaches to provide customized dietary recommendations for individuals based on their genetic profile, microbiota, physical activity, and lifestyle. PN focuses on biological biomarkers characterizing each individual to apply more effective and personalized nutritional guidelines.

Genetic makeup significantly contributes to inter-individual variations in dietary behaviors, with advanced genome sequencing and population genetics aiding in detecting gene variants associated with lifestyle disorders such as obesity. Additionally, PN-based host-microbiota evaluation emerges as an advanced therapeutic tool, impacting disease control and prevention and improved compliance. Next-generation probiotics and even fecal microbiota transplantation are being researched in this context. It integrates genetic nutrition (nutrigenetics/nutrigenomics) to optimize health, manage weight, and prevent chronic diseases.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a promising tool for the interpretation of omics-generated data and provides valuable insights that could be used in the development of personalized nutrition strategies. By integrating epigenetics data, gene expression, and proteomics through protein-protein interactions, Omics Integrator employs network optimization algorithms to analyze extensive molecular interaction networks.

The challenges in the field are data integration, scalability & cost, evidence gaps, a need for public acceptance of these technologies, and legal issues surrounding the use of individual genetic information, which are still to be addressed to bring the potential of genomic precision nutrition.
