Public health is an interdisciplinary career path, blending fields like epidemiology, biostatistics, health policy, environmental health, health management, community health, maternal and child health, mental health, and health economics. There are salient distinctions between public health and clinical health professions. The career opportunities are broader, encompassing government agencies, private sectors, research institutes, international organizations, NGOs, hospitals, and academia. Public health professionals can work in disease prevention and control, policy analysis and management, population health sciences, global health, public health laboratories, pharmaceuticals, public health/community health, entomology, health education, nutrition, global health, occupational health, and public health informatics (1).

With advancing technology and global health challenges, roles in data analytics, health equity, digital health and communication, and planetary health are growing fast (1). Core competencies outlined by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) and Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH) include leadership, systems thinking, communication, and program planning (2).

International public health programs are in high demand for their global perspectives and research strength. In India, the demand for Master of Public Health (MPH) graduates is increasing in both public and private sectors. These programs equip students from diverse backgrounds with essential skills and leadership for multidisciplinary roles (3). However, challenges such as limited job awareness, weak application skills, and poor working conditions demonstrate the importance of stronger institutional support and clearer career pathways (4). Tackling global public health challenges requires a robust public health cadre, and a skilled workforce is needed urgently to achieve sustainable development goals by 2030 (1).

The health services delivery sector is undergoing rapid change. Greater emphasis is being placed on health promotion and disease prevention as a means to reduce the cost of care by improving the population’s health. From traditional roles of working in hospital or clinic-based settings, there is diverse array of roles , a public health professional can play. For instance, health policy and management (academic, manager, policy advisor/policy analyst etc), disease prevention and control (public health physician, epidemiologist, surveillance officer, monitoring and evaluation coordinator, data manager, statistician etc), health promotion (health educator, counsellor, mass medical coordinator etc), occupational/environment health (environmental scientist, factory inspectors etc),public health nutrition (food inspector, drug inspector, jobs in food safety etc), pharmaceuticals (pharmacovigilance, drug research etc), global health (public health preparedness, epidemiologist, surveillance, policy adviser etc). However, existing literature indicates that majority of public health graduates are not aware of these carrier opportunities available to  them in health sector. In addition to this, they also lacked required support and skills to apply for such jobs and sustain into such roles.
