The Research Connect

A Discourse and Workshop on Public Health Research was successfully organized on January 9, 2026 under the aegis of the Multidisciplinary Research Unit (MRU), Government Medical College, Srinagar, Garhwal, aimed at strengthening public health research culture and fostering collaborative, impactful research.

Keynote Speaker

Dr. Ashish Joshi emphasized that medical education today goes beyond clinical practice and must integrate research, public health, and societal impact. He highlighted the importance of implementing data driven population health solutions that address community needs, and that there is an urgent need to introduce clinical and public health research curriculum for the undergraduate and postgraduate medical, dental and nursing students. He emphasized the importance of collaborative and interdisciplinary teams with need to translate research into practice.

He also shared his journey as a medical student to becoming the Dean of a School of Public Health in the U.S., underscoring how government medical colleges, with the right vision, can become powerful agents of change in public health and research.

Dr. Ashutosh Sayana, Principal, GMC Srinagar, highlighted the strategic role of the institution in serving five districts of Uttarakhand and emphasized the importance of research on non-communicable diseases, maternal and child health, and disaster-related health challenges.

Faculty panelists and participants stressed the need for interdisciplinary research, early student engagement, locally relevant studies, and evidence-informed policy research.

A meaningful step toward building a strong, collaborative, and research-driven public health ecosystem.
