June 24, 2026 – Our second school visit under the “Public Health Through the Lens of the Youth” initiative took us to Talsande High School, Talsande (Hatkanangale Block), Kolhapur, Maharashtra where we received an incredibly warm and heartfelt welcome from the school administration. The visit began with a beautiful cultural dance performance by the students.
The initiative aims not only to educate adolescents about public health but also to empower them to become active contributors to the health and well-being of their families, schools, and communities.
Dr. Ashish Joshi, PhD, MBBS, MPH, Dean and Distinguished University Professor, University of Memphis School of Public Health introduced students to the Public Health in Action curriculum. He shared how the establishment of Public Health Clubs in schools can nurture socially responsible, health-conscious young leaders who can drive positive change in their communities.
An engaging interactive session introduced students to the concept of public health and encouraged them to reflect on their role in building healthier communities. Discussions focused on healthy lifestyles, responsible use of technology, the importance of adequate sleep and regular physical activity, and how individual actions collectively contribute to community well-being.
The enthusiasm of the students was truly inspiring, with thoughtful participation and meaningful discussions throughout the session.
As part of the initiative, eight student leaders from Grades 8, 9, and 10 were selected to establish and lead the Public Health Club in their school, marking the beginning of a student-led movement towards healthier schools and communities.
We sincerely thank the Principal, teachers, and the Kolhapur district administration for their continued support and commitment to empowering young people through public health education.
